From Insights to Actionable Feedback

A team in applied R&D had worked with INSIGHTS Discovery, but wanted to turn their working style preferences into something they could use in feedback situations. They worked closely across scientists, technicians, and commercial roles, and several had stepped up and taken on additional responsibility over a period of time.

That extra contribution was rarely made visible. Feedback was present, but inconsistent and often tied to specific tasks. Appreciation stayed general, and existing knowledge about working style differences was not actively used in daily collaboration.

Solution:

The team first experienced their interdependence physically in a large elastic band, simulating psychological safety in the team. Small movements required others to adjust, making it clear how much coordination depends on people responding to each other and how feedback enables that adjustment in real time.

This was followed by a LEGO build exercise where participants had to rely on instructions and respond as they went. Assumptions appeared quickly, instructions were interpreted differently, and understanding was rarely checked. When feedback was introduced between rounds, the difference became visible: it only worked when it was both given and actively asked for.

From there, feedback was linked directly to individual INSIGHTS preferences. The team worked with different feedback types and practiced giving specific appreciation. The session ended with small experiments, each with clear actions, timelines, and ownership.

Outcome:

  • Appreciation shifted ‘good job’ to specific feedback
  • Feedback responsibility moved from managers to the whole team
  • Concrete feedback actions with timelines and ownership
  • Participants committed to asking for feedback linked to their goals

Testimonial:

Nice and concrete way to talk about feedback. Less boxy and very interactive — making INSIGHTS feel less stereotypical and more practical, with something concrete to take away.
